BELLVUE, Colo. (AP) — Authorities in Larimer County are scratching their heads over the case of a man who bought an antique toy decorated with a Confederate flag, then shot it nine times in the street with a handgun.
The white man in his 60s bought an antique toy wagon decorated with the Confederate emblem for $30 from a thrift store, The Coloradoan reported Friday (http://noconow.co/1CWMzYC ). Then he dragged the wagon into the street and tried to run over it with his SUV.
Witnesses say the man then exited his vehicle with a handgun and shot at the wagon at least nine times. No one was hurt, but witnesses scattered.
The incident happened June 27, 10 days after a gunman who appeared in photos waving Confederate flags opened fire in a church in Charleston, South Carolina, killing nine people.
The Larimer County sheriff's office didn't release a report about the incident for nearly a month, the newspaper reported. No explanation was given for the delay.
Deputies investigated the toy incident to see if it was tied to three Northern Colorado shootings but never located a suspect, according to the report released Thursday.
The gunman left the site of the wagon shooting before deputies arrived. A deputy observed what appeared to be a tire spin mark on the gravel where the incident happened, along with several shell casings and jacketed bullets.
It's unclear whether the shooting is still being investigated in connection with the Northern Colorado shootings. The status of the wagon case is "in suspense," according to the report.
