ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- The University of Michigan regents have rejected the athletic department's proposal to light up the football field this fall with the help of fireworks displays.
Thursday's meeting in Ann Arbor was the first for new university President Mark Schlissel.
The athletic department proposed using fireworks during home games against Miami University on Sept. 13 and Penn State on Oct. 11.
Thursday's votes were 4-3 against fireworks at the Miami game and 5-2 against them at the Penn State game.
The fireworks would have been set off from the Michigan Stadium field and from the stadium's east and west towers.
Regent Laurence Deitch says the shows would have been unnecessary risky and incoinsiderate of area residents.
