EASTON, Pa. (AP) -- A man who was found with a knife in his neck after he was shot by police following a car chase in eastern Pennsylvania succumbed to the gunshot wound, a prosecutor said Wednesday. Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli said that according to the county coroner, the knife wound was a contributing factor to Richard Scheuermann III's death but not the primary one. The coroner intends to rule Scheuermann's death a homicide, Morganelli told The Express-Times of Easton. Police said they pursued Scheuermann, 39, early on Oct. 24 after seeing him driving the wrong way on a Palmer Township road. Scheuermann rammed his truck into a police car, was shot twice, and was found with the knife in his neck after he hit a utility pole, according to court records. Morganelli has said he could refer the case to a grand jury or state prosecutors for a probe into whether the shooting was justified, and is also considering information provided by a lawyer who has been investigating Scheuermann's death at the request of his family. "The events as they unfolded involved seconds and minutes," Morganelli said earlier this week. "In fairness to the police officer and to the victim's family, there should be no rush to judgment." His family asserts police didn't have to shoot Scheuermann. "I want to see justice for him," his sister, Liza Scheuermann, told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
