Controlled burn creates smoke column near Mainville

If you see smoke in the sky over Catawissa Mountain, it's just a controlled fire set by the Bureau of Forestry, county emergency management officials say.

Jennifer Long of Columbia County EMA says it's been trying to keep people informed of the fire near Fire Tower Road and Bridge Road on state gamelands.

It's the third day in the past week a controlled burn has been held in the area.

Forestry officials have said the controlled burns stop the growth of birch and maple trees and help trees with stronger root systems, like oaks, flourish.
