Free snow shoveling for Berwick seniors; volunteers needed

Last updated: January 25, 2015 - 6:39pm

Senior citizens and the disabled in Berwick can call City Hall to get the snow on their walks shoveled out for free. Council President Alvin Hill asked volunteers willing to help dig to call City Hall as well. Both those who need help and those who can volunteer can call 570-752-2723 ext. 0 starting at 8 a.m. Monday. Volunteers are scheduled to meet at 4 p.m. Monday at City Hall with shovels and snowblowers to get their assignments. The free assistance is only for seniors and the disabled who would normally be responsible for shoveling their own walks, he said. Last year, at least one landlord called hoping for free help shoveling out his rental units and was turned down. The program started last February, when close to 70 volunteers, including many student athletes from Berwick High School, showed up to dig out 35 houses as well as some cars. Forecasters at the National Weather Service put out a winter weather advisory through 7 p.m. Monday for Columbia, Montour, Luzerne, Northumberland, Lycoming, Elk, Cameron, Clinton, Lycoming, Union and Schuylkill counties. Most of the snow should stop falling by mid-morning today, they said. The snow is coming from a storm system passing south of the state this morning and a secondary coastal storm expected later today.
