DANVILLE. — A pair of fatal crashes within seven hours of each other Friday shut down the westbound lanes of I-80 from Buckhorn to Limestoneville.

Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn confirmed a local woman died in the second crash, which occurred around 10 a.m. about two miles east of the Danville interchange, when her vehicle slammed into the rear of a flatbed trailer .

The force of that crash crushed the top of the vehicle as it went beneath the trailer in the right travel lane of the highway in Valley Township.

It was the second wreck of the morning.

Around 2:42 a.m., a 16-vehicle pileup about three miles east of the Limestoneville exit caused by a snow squall left one person dead and and two others seriously hurt.

Lynn said a man died in that fiery crash. His identity had not yet been confirmed.

Volunteer fire crews and emergency responders from Montour and Northumberland counties assisted police at the initial overnight crash.

Crews from Buckhorn and Bloomsburg were dispatched as additional help at the second accident, joining fire units from Danville, Liberty Township and Valley Township, emergency officials said.
