New details emerge in spate of vehicle thefts

HEMLOCK TWP. — A homeowner spooked a would-be thief, caught rummaging through his son’s car parked on Hunt Club Drive, when he flipped on an exterior light Monday morning, police say.

Authorities are still looking for leads in a spate of car break-ins around the Foxtail development earlier this week.

John Kurelja called for help after spotting the  stranger outside his 74 Hunt Club Drive home around 5:30 a.m. Monday, said Chief Michael VanDine.

The suspect ran towards the Foxtail development and was seen again about an hour later walking toward Buckhorn on Schoolhouse Road between Hedgerow Road and Service Lane, police say.

The suspect is described as a man in his 30s, with black hair; he was wearing a Carhartt jacket and jeans at the time of the break-ins.

So far, six victims have reported everything from loose change to GPS units being taken from unlocked cars parked near their homes in the area. Some found the interiors of their vehicles disturbed, center consoles flung open, but nothing missing.

Five of the thefts were along a stretch of Hunt Club Drive from houses 34 to 103, sometime between Sunday night and early Monday morning; the other was from a vehicle at 46 Red Mill Road.

Anyone with information is asked to call Hemlock Township Police at 570-784-6543.
