BLOOMSBURG — Someone wrapped a tiny dog inside the leg of a pair of pants and threw it out of a truck window early Thursday, town police say.

Bloomsburg Police Chief Scott Price said he answered a call at the station around 1:30 Thursday afternoon from a woman reporting she had scooped up a small dog wandering East Ninth Street in town.

Price said officer Ryan Edgar met with the woman — whom Price declined to identify — who told him she also found a pair of knotted pants in the road, between Catherine Street and Poplar Street.

The woman checked with neighbors and found Ring doorbell footage that showed someone in a pickup truck had thrown the pants out the window with the dog inside at 5:50 a.m., earlier that morning.

Police are now looking for the driver of a light-colored, older model Chevrolet Silverado extended cab.

Tied in pants

“The individual took this dog and tied the pants legs shut and put the dog in a pair of pants,” Price said Friday. “It appears the intent was to conceal it was a dog so someone would run it over.”

But, Price said, the 4-to-5-pound Chihuahua-mix crawled out of the pants leg.

The dog was tossed from the passenger-side window of a truck seen heading east toward Poplar Street, Price said.

He said because doorbell footage is not high quality, police are unable to see how many people are in the car or read the license plate.

“The Ring doorbells are great but the problem is they never capture license plates,” Price said.

However, he said the early 2000s truck is rare because it had an extended cab — not as popular a feature when it was new.

‘Senseless’

Price said the dog appears to be older and is very sweet. The tiny animal is mostly brown but has white on its muzzle and chest. It was not wearing a collar; police plan to have it scanned for a microchip today.

Price said police are investigating the dog tossing as an act of animal cruelty.

“It's senseless,” Price said. “I get the sense it’s someone local because, if this was your mindset, and this is what you would do with this doggie, why in the middle of a populated street?”

Anyone who recognizes the dog or the truck is asked to call Ptlm. Ryan Edgar: 570-784-4155 ext or regar@bloomsburgpa.org.
