State crews cleared some local roads that were closed yesterday, but drifting snow has shut down others.
As of 7:13 a.m. in Columbia County, Tyson School Road from Middle Road to Ashton Hollow Road in Cleveland Township were closed by drifts, said PennDOT spokesman Dave Thompson.
Middle Road between Fisherdale Road and Tyson School Road, also in Cleveland Township, was closed, too.
So was Orchard Drive between Mount Zion Road and Route 487 in Franklin Township.
On the bright side, Derrs Road and Columbia Hill Road in Madison Township had reopened.
And in Montour County, Shultz Road was also clear and open again.
The rest area between the Mifflin and Nescopeck interchanges was also open to all traffic again; it had been closed to trucks, which had pulled off the highway in large numbers for the storm, making it impossible to clear snow from the truck parking lot.
Nevertheless, winter conditions still exist, especially on secondary roads where drifting snow and squalls can create unexpected driving hazards, Thompson warned.
Drivers should remain alert for sudden squalls, which can quickly cover roads with snow and cause whiteouts, virtually eliminating a driver’s ability to see.
Roads that look wet may actually be icy, and motorists should be especially careful approaching bridges and highway ramps, where ice can form without warning, Thompson said.
He also reminded drivers to leave plenty of space when following a truck that is plowing or spreading winter materials.
