BERWICK — Police here are warning the public to be on the lookout for a homeless man accused of stabbing a Berwick man in the back Tuesday.
John Thomas Gurns, 52, should be considered armed and dangerous, and anyone caught harboring him will be arrested, said Police Chief Kenneth Strish.
Gurns’ alleged victim, Richard Miller, 64, is listed in critical condition at Geisinger Medical Center, a spokeswoman there said.
If anyone has any information on Gurns’ whereabouts, Strish said, they should dial 911 or call the East Central Emergency Network at 570-784-6300.
The stabbing took place at 124 Cemetery St. around 7:11 p.m.
Miller told police he had been drinking in the kitchen with Gurns.
When he turned away, Gurns picked a hunting knife with a 4-inch blade from the table and stabbed him in the upper back, according to charges.
Miller’s son heard the commotion and came into the kitchen to find Miller on the floor and Gurns still holding the knife, police said.
Gurns started towards the son, then dropped the knife on the couch, charges said.
He then shoved the son and fled out the front door.
Gurns is charged with attempted homicide and aggravated assault.
He is white, about 6 feet tall and 170 pounds, with brown, receding hair, a moustache and brown eyes.
