Water break leaves dozens of Berwick residents dry

Last updated: August 24, 2016 - 8:02pm

BERWICK — A water main break shut off water for an estimated 50 to 60 customers here and closed down busy Summerhill Avenue Wednesday evening.

A tanker of water for residents to use will be brought to the parking lot of Bethany Church, by Jessup Street and Summerhill Avenue, where the break occurred, said a spokeswoman for Pennsylvania American Water Co.

As of 7:43 p.m., crews had managed to turn off the many valves necessary to isolate the pipe, and planned to dig through the street within the hour to find the break, said Susan Turcmanovich.

How long residents will be without water will depend on the seriousness of the break in the 12-inch pipe, she said.

If water is discolored when it returns, residents should let the cold faucet run until it becomes clear, she added.
