WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue University's student government has suggested expanding alcohol sales at sporting events could fund a needed increase in student mental health services.

The Lafayette Journal & Courier (on.jconline.com/1ODuBZL ) reports the campus mental health facility saw a 15 percent increase from last year in students seeking appointments. The wait list is about 100 students a week.

Student government President Mike Young says money from alcohol sales could partially fund the $682,000 plan to meet higher staffing levels needed to meet international standards.

The school has allowed season ticket holders and VIP guests to buy alcohol at the campus stadium since 2014. Other fans cannot.

Purdue President Mitch Daniels says he'll consider the plan. Projected sales are $500,000.

The University of Maryland uses alcohol sales at games to fund mental health services.
