KETCHIKAN, Alaska (AP) — Alaska wildlife was a factor in a weekend traffic crash but this time it wasn't a moose, caribou or bear.

Alaska State Troopers say 75-year-old Myrna Losquadro of Ketchikan on Saturday braked as she rounded a curve on the Tongass Highway to avoid striking a marten dragging or fighting with a chicken in the road.

Forty-seven-year-old Burton Morrison was following Losquadro.

Heavy rain made it hard to stop. Morrison's truck slammed into the back of Losquadro's car.

A passenger in the truck was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Martens are members of the weasel family prized for their fur. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game says they feed primarily on voles but will kill birds and squirrels.

The department says bald eagles will sometimes kill and eat martens.
