Bloomsburg man reported missing

BLOOMSBURG — Family members have filed a missing person report for a 78-year-old Bloomsburg man last seen Monday, police say.

Wayne Mowery typically sticks to a routine and has been known to make frequent trips to the Columbia Mall to walk around or to the Bloomsburg YMCA to exercise, his family said.

“Everybody always knew where to find Pappy,” said Tony DiVirgilio, who’s married to Mowery’s granddaughter, Jennifer. “That’s the problem. He was a creature of habit. He went from being completely meticulously on a daily schedule to just pretty much disappearing off the face of the earth.”

Neither Mowery nor his red or maroon Chevrolet Cruze have turned up this week, said Bloomsburg Police Officer Gerard Zeidler.

On Wednesday, authorities received a tip from a neighbor who thought he saw Mowery’s car return to his home and leave again, but the sighting has still not been confirmed.

Mowery is very active, and it’s common for him to be out of the house often, Zeidler said.

Police say he does not have any major medical concerns, although the family noted that he is diabetic and sometimes unsteady on his feet.

But Zeidler said Mowery’s age and the atypical behavior are what spurred the family to call police.

The Bloomsburg Police Department is attempting to locate Mowery and check on his welfare. Any information to assist in their search can be directed to 570-784-6300.

DiVirgilio also asked that anyone with information contact him or his wife at 570-394-4747 or 570-394-4746.

A Facebook plea he made for help locating Mowery was shared more than 500 times in the first six hours Thursday afternoon.
