Dryer fire briefly shuts down Old Berwick Road

SCOTT TWP. — A dryer fire Wednesday morning caused heavy smoke to fill a second-story bathroom but did little damage to the rest of a two-story townhouse here.

Firefighters from Espy and Bloomsburg removed the smoldering Hot Point model dryer from the townhouse and used exhaust fans to ventilate the upper floor at 14 Yocum Drive, which is part of a townhouse development located across Old Berwick Road from Sherwood Village.

Nick Pasi, who has lived in the townhouse for about seven months, said he had been running the dryer earlier in the morning without a problem.

But he then smelled something burnin as he was getting ready to leave for work at Short Stop Mart near Lightstreet and found the bathroom filling with smoke when he opened the door.

Pasi, his sister-in-law Kinal Patel and her 1-year-old daughter all got out of the residence safely as firefighters began arriving shortly before 11 a.m.

Assistant Espy Fire Chief Patrick Creasy said, in addition to smoke, there was some minimal water damage to the property.

Old Berwick Road was shut down briefly as fire crews aired out the townhouse.
