Millville start-of-school delayed again due to mold

MILLVILLE — Students here won’t be going to school Friday, and it’s unclear if classes will start Monday while the district waits for the results of mold tests, the superintendent says.

School officials still hadn’t received the results of tests taken Wednesday of the green spots found on some wooden surfaces at the elementary school, said Superintendent Cynthia Jenkins Thursday.

More tests and samples were taken Thursday, she said.

She was hoping that by the end of today, administrators would be able to decide if they can open for the school year Monday.

The district is updating its Web page and notifying parents to keep them informed, she said.

Without knowing exactly what the spots are, no one know how to properly treat them, she said.

She suspected the humid summer and recent wet weather was partially responsible. A broken chiller at the elementary school also left the building without air conditioning, adding to the problem, she said.

The district had dehumidifiers, but they weren’t enough to discourage the growths, she said.
