Nescopeck residents without water because of main break

NESCOPECK — Water to large sections of the borough of Nescopeck dried up Tuesday after a 12-inch water main under the Susquehanna River sprung a leak, officials say.

Pennsylvania American is now trying to pinpoint the leak to repair it, said Greg Freitas of Luzerne County Emergency Management Agency.

Crews have laid 3,000 feet of hose across the Berwick-Nescopeck bridge to provide some low-pressure water service to residents. But Pennsylvania American warned that anyone who can get water out of their taps should boil it before using it.

Mayor Larry Massina said the borough was also preparing a response in case of a fire in the borough.

Pennsylvania American supplies both Berwick and Nescopeck with water from wells on the Berwick side of the river, according to company water system descriptions.

The company said Tuesday that the water main break was affecting service to about 600 customers, and that those customers without water should boil their water whenever service is restored.

Residents reported that water service in the area cut off around 12:30 p.m.
