Fire leaves 9 homeless

HUNTINGTON MILLS -- A mom was home with her young children Wednesday when her 5-year-old son began shouting about a fire in an electrical cord upstairs, officials say. She ran up the steps in hopes of putting it out, but flames were already spreading in the second-floor bedroom. She grabbed the kids and headed outside. In all, three adults and six kids were left homeless after flames broke out in the house along Route 239 in this Luzerne County village, officials said. Fire officials did not release any names, saying the family are "private people" who did not want their names in the press.

SPORTS: Three soccer teams move on in playoffs

Three area soccer teams have moved on in the state playoffs, while a fourth saw their season end Tuesday. The Danville boys team beat Tunkhannock 2-1 in overtime, while Bloomsburg boys team topped Trinity 1-0 in overtime, as well. The Southern girls scored a 5-3, come-from-behind victory against Schyulkill Haven, while Millville's girls team lost 2-1 to Tuplehocken. Missing Briar Creek teen found

By Press Enterprise Staff BRIAR CREEK -- State Police said a 16-year-old boy who had been missing since Monday night has been found and returned home. Olen Berry, of Briar Creek Borough, left his house at 5:45 p.m. Monday after getting into an argument over household rules, officers said. Troopers asked the public for help finding him when he hadn't returned home by 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Millville grad dies in crash, coroner says

MILTON - A Millville graduate driving home from work at Geisinger Medical Center died when she collided with another vehicle Tuesday morning in West Chillisquaque Township, officials say. Megan Dilick, 22, who has been living in Lewisburg recently, was taken back to the hospital by ambulance. But she was pronounced dead there at 9:10 a.m., about 40 minutes after the crash, said Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn. Dilick died from blunt force trauma to the head and chest, he said.

Police identify alleged shooter, victim

BLOOMSBURG -- The man who fired a shot at another man in an early morning fight on Old Berwick Road "had a long history" with the victim, police say. Harold "Bucky" Smith, 24, of 21 Rocky Ridge Lane, Nescopeck, was arrested Monday on felony assault charges for firing a .380 Keltec semi-automatic handgun at Brian Laubach's feet Sunday just before 2 a.m. Here's what police say happened:

Town cruiser smashed up

BLOOMSBURG -- A town police officer slammed a cruiser into an East Street utility pole Friday as he swerved to avoid a car pulling into his path, the police chief said. Ptlm. Lewis Carl was taken to Geisinger-Bloomsburg Hospital to be checked out, said Chief Roger Van Loan. He had some complaints of bruising. The cruiser's front driver side crumpled when it hit the pole, and its airbag deployed. Carl was wearing his seat belt, Van Loan said.

Man who broke infant daughter's leg sentenced to state prison

BLOOMSBURG -- A 19-year-old man who broke his infant daughter's leg because she wouldn't stop crying was sentenced to a lengthy stay in state prison by a judge who called his actions "despicable and inexcusable." Andrew Hess, 19, must serve 19 months for fracturing all three bones in his then 2-month-old daughter Elvira's right leg. Hess told Judge Gary E. Norton he has spent nearly a year in jail and is anxious to go home and see his mom. "All I want to do is go home for Thanksgiving and spend Christmas with my family," Hess said.X-ray revealed multiple fractures

Man asks judge to show mercy to brother's killer

BLOOMSBURG -- A man asked a judge to show mercy to the teen driver who ran down his brother and left him to die along the roadside last year. Joseph Scott Rish, 19, has admitted he was drunk when he struck 50-year-old Robert Mohr, who was walking his bicycle along Ridge Road early in the morning of Sept. 16, 2012. Rish never stopped to see what he struck, and police later found him hiding in a relative's home, they said. Rish apologized to the Mohr family, as well as his own.
