Shoplifter faces jail time over stolen beauty products

BLOOMSBURG — A Berwick woman who stole less than $20 worth of beauty and health products at a Dollar General Store will spend three months in prison, a judge ruled Tuesday.

Columbia County District Attorney Tom Leipold pointed out that Michalene Abshire, 54, has an arrest record of retail thefts or shoplifting dating back 35 years, and incarceration was warranted.

“All for $16.50 in health and beauty aids. For which restitution must be paid,” the DA told the court.

Doc pleads guilty to overseeing childbirth drunk

BLOOMSBURG — A doctor who supervised emergency surgery on a woman during childbirth admitted he was drunk during the procedure and was sentenced to four months on house arrest, followed by six months of probation.

Dr. Ananda Panikkar, 68, also admitted his blood alcohol level was .28 percent, more than three times the legal limit for drivers, the night police pulled him over just minutes after he left the hospital on July 13, 2017.

Trump, Congress leaders near deal to end shutdown

WASHINGTON (AP) — Yielding to mounting pressure and growing disruption, President Donald Trump and congressional leaders on Friday reached a short-term deal to reopen the government for three weeks while negotiations continue over the president's demands for money to build his long-promised wall at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Trump announced the agreement to break the 35-day impasse as intensifying delays at the nation's airports and widespread disruptions brought new urgency to efforts to resolve the standoff.

Police say they've nabbed bank robber

BERWICK — Police say they've nabbed the man responsible for robbing a bank on South Poplar Street here Jan. 15 and plan to bring him before the district judge later tonight.

A man dressed all in black came into the Fulton Bank that Tuesday and handed a teller a note, demanding money and saying he had a bomb.

A teller gave him the money, and the man fled on foot, heading south toward Susquehanna Avenue and the river.

Police plan to arraign the suspect before District Judge Richard Knecht around 7 p.m. tonight.

Fire damages Hunlock Creek home

Fire ravaged a home at 273 Spring Hill Dr. in Hunlock Creek on Wednesday night. 

Bradley Passehl was returning home from buying groceries when he opened the door to his kitchen and saw flames. He immediately closed the door and called 9-1-1. 

Crews responded quickly, dousing the blaze which they say was spread through the walls. No one was home when the fire began, and Passehl was not injured. 

Overnight fire levels Catawissa storage building

CATAWISSA — A two-alarm blaze destroyed a large pole barn early Tuesday on the Whistle Stop property along Railroad Street here.

Property owner Walt Gosciminski said the 16-foot high building was being rented out for storage to a woodworking business, but he was not sure what might have been inside at the time.

“Nothing but tin there now,” he said. “I’ll give it a couple days and get in there and clean it up.”

Head-on collision sends four to the hospital in rural Montour

LIBERTY TWP. — Medics took four people to the hospital after a head-on collision along Route 45 around 1:30 p.m. Friday.

State Police say the driver of a Ford Mercury was pulling out onto Route 45 from Beaver Run Road when the Mercury was struck by a Honda Prius traveling west.

The force of the collision crumpled the front ends of both cars, and the Prius was pushed onto an embankment after its airbags deployed. 

Police released no information on the drivers or passengers in the cars as of press time.
