Balzano’s begins new chapter in Bloom

BLOOMSBURG -- For 15 years, Balzano's has been a staple of the downtown restaurant scene. Offering delicious Italian food with a variety of services, the business has grown from a small restaurant on East Street to a multi-location restaurant and catering business. Lucy Hergan and her father, Alphonse Balzano, or "Mr. B" to everyone on Main Street, opened the doors in September of 1998 and let the customers drive the business. The Balzano's story has been told many times, but as the days march on, new chapters are always being written. Mr. B.'s legacy lives on through the employees who have stayed with the business for more than a decade, the recipes he gave to create the menu and the commitment to service he believed was the secret to success. Balzano's Catering has been a consistent presence in the Bloomsburg area and still serves as the exclusive caterer for the beautiful Rolling Pines Golf and Banquet Facility in Berwick. In May of 2012, Balzano's left its little Italian Kitchen on East Street to open the doors at 112 East Main and settle into a new, bigger home. Now, the original location provides counter service and delivery in town. The "new" Balzano's continues to grow into its identity as a large restaurant with a bar and a great live music scene. Over the last 19 months, bands have started popping up on the stage every weekend. Friday and Saturday nights bring musicians in from all over Central Pennsylvania and sometimes from as far away as the West Coast. The restaurant serves food from a bar menu from 9 to 11 p.m., while the music goes long into the night. Great drinks from the bar include craft beers on draft, along with the Pennsylvania favorite Yuengling Lager. House and fine wines, a full bar and great drink specials are always available. Martini specials are the newest endeavor for the bar, as the staff gets creative with great, never-before-seen recipes for the area. While the bar continues to grow and change, under the partnership and ownership of Hergan and Marissa and Megan Scala, so does the restaurant. New and exciting events are lined up as the restaurant readies itself to step into its third year in the location. The transition has been a learning experience for everyone involved, and Hergan believes in the evolution of business. "We are taking it on every day, assessing the areas where we can make changes for the better and knowing what we do well," she said. "We know we have the most loyal and wonderful customers in the area, and keeping them coming back and comfortable is on the forefront of our minds." That said, Hergan also knows that taking on the bigger location means taking on all new endeavors. "The new restaurant has changed the way we have had to do things, and we are listening to our customers and friends regarding what they miss about the old place, hoping to bring it to the new one," she said. Weekly events are starting this winter, with nightly specials from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays are jumbo wings and $5 lager pitchers. With five new sauces and the biggest wings in town, Balzano's will be the place to be. Wednesdays will be Pasta Night, with "All You Can Eat Mr. B's Pasta and Meatballs" and other great pasta specials. Thursday is Seafood Night with great specials on shrimp, scallops and other seafood not available on the regular menu. A nightly wine will be featured. Sundays will offer comfort food features and kids eat free! Each Sunday, Balzano's will unveil a new cocktail of the week. With seasonal brews, larger wine variety, $2 and $3 bottled beers every week and a martini menu on the way, there's no place that offers more versatility behind the taps or in the kitchen. "My dad would be proud," said Hergan. "He loved this business."
