BLOOMSBURG – It's been seven weeks since Steven Whitenight Jr. went missing in the midst of delivering papers, leaving an abandoned car, cell phone and keys near the East Bloomsburg Bridge.
(See updated story in Tuesday's edition.)
Seven weeks that his father Steven Whitenight Sr. has chased down tips that his son may have been spotted at this convenience store or that gas station.
Seven weeks that those tips have turned up empty.
Seven weeks that Steven Whitenight Sr. has hoped for a call. "If he were to be alive, if he could just contact me, say 'I'm OK, just don't want to be found.' It's kind of tearing the family apart."
And seven weeks that Steven Whitenight Sr. has dreaded the phone ringing. "You worry it's going to be someone saying a body's been found in the water," he said. "In a way, every day that goes by that we don't get a phone call, it could mean he's still alive."
Whitenight Jr., 30, disappeared the morning of Jan. 14, in the midst of delivering a newspaper route. He left newspapers ready for delivery on the porch of the house he shared with then-girlfriend Michelle Zeiber. Police found his car — with keys and cell phone inside — parked near the East Bloomsburg Bridge.
But since then, there's been no trace of him, his father says.
His bank accounts haven't been active. Surveillance video at locations where he may have been spotted hasn't turned up any evidence of him. And the last reported sighting Whitenight Sr. knew of was three weeks ago, he said.
There's been no trace of him on social media.
Still, Whitenight Sr. said he wasn't giving up.
As the weather improves, he says he'll go back to searching the riverbank. He asks that everyone else keep their eyes open as well.
"I'm never going to give up on him," he said. "If my heart is beating, I'll be looking for him."
Steven Whitenight Jr. is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, 165 pounds, with light brown hair and hazel eyes.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Bloomsburg Police: 570-784-6779. Whitenight Sr. said people could also call him with information at 570-854-4249.
