Police chief files counter-PFA against abuse accuser

MILLVILLE -- Longtime Police Chief Ted Stout, off the job over abuse accusations made by a former girlfriend, filed a counter-claim against the woman. Tori Harrison, who lived with Stout and worked as his subordinate in Millville and a neighboring department, asked a court last month for a temporary protection-from-abuse order. As a result, Stout was forced to give up his guns and move to desk duty amid a State Police investigation.

Driver killed in wreck was cancer survivor

MILLVILLE - A breast cancer survivor from the Benton area was killed Wednesday morning when she pulled out into the path of a utility truck just north of the borough on Route 42, officials say. Margaret Eve Haddow, 49, was on her way to Geisinger for a follow-up mammogram around 8 a.m. when she pulled out from Sereno Hollow Road in her sub-compact Ford and crossed into the path of the bucket truck, according to family and police.

Tractor trailer overturns

SOUTH CENTRE TWP. -- A tractor trailer hauling the remains of a flood-destroyed home tipped over on the interstate on-ramp, spilling several tons of debris on the road. David Dea, 33, of Hazleton, was driving about 12 tons of material from a demolished home in Scott Township at 10:20 a.m. Dea, who was headed north on Route 11, failed to make the left curve to Route 11 south and the Interstate 80 west on-ramp and overtured onto its passenger side.

House fire is deadly in Hunlock

HUNLOCK CREEK -- A smoky fire killed a man inside his longtime home here Thursday afternoon. Family members of Kent Brace spotted smoke coming from his Hartman Road home around 3:30 p.m.. They were unable to get inside to help him. A call to 9-1-1 drew a quick response, family said. But Brace's body was discovered in the front living room of the smoke-filled home when firefighters arrived. Firefighters had not determined what may have caused the fire, or where it might have originated in Brace's two-story house.
