Teen hurt in utility vehicle accident

NUMIDIA -- A teenager was injured when he was thrown from the small utility vehicle he was driving in the woods here Tuesday and had to be flown to the hospital for his injuries, police said. Jeffrey Cox, 13, was riding in the Honda side-by-side with a friend a little after 5 p.m., when the ground beneath the vehicle apparently gave way along a hill, Locust Township Police Chief Allen Breach said. It was unclear exactly what happened. The Honda was dented, but it was not scuffed up in a way that would indicate it overturned, the boy's father said.

Man escapes burning home, manages to save only wallet

HUNTINGTON TWP. -- A man escaped his burning home in his pajamas and stocking feet early Tuesday afternoon, moments after he turned on his propane-fired furnace and black smoke belched from the registers. Jamie Piatt, 35, had just gotten up from bed and turned on the furnace in the home he shares with his mother, Jenna, at 309 Thorn Hill Road, when he heard a popping sound, Jenna Piatt said. After seeing smoke, he flipped the switch to turn the furnace off, she said. But the fire had apparently already started to spread.

Rig hung up on railroad tracks in South Centre

SOUTH CENTRE TWP. -- A truck driver told police he blacked out at the wheel on Route 11 here on Tuesday, causing his truck to veer off the road and crash onto the railroad tracks alongside Route 11. Kenneth M. Rosian, 53, of North Royalton, Ohio, was headed southbound around 10:30 a.m. near the Interstate 80 overpass "driving normally before he suddenly cut to the left," a witness told South Centre Police Chief Bill Richendrfer.

Woman stabbed in Berwick

BERWICK -- A man stabbed a woman in an alley near LaSalle Street on Sunday night, police say. Now they're looking for the man, described as a white male in his early 20s between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-8, with a thin build. He possibly has dark brown hair. Last night, he was wearing a black jacket, black knit cap and jeans. The woman, a 51-year-old, was standing in an alley in the 1000 block of Lasalle at 8:51 p.m. when a man approached her and asked if she had any money. When she didn't provide any, he stabbed her below the waistline in the "center part of her torso," police said.

Armed robbery alleged, Bloomsburg police seek BU student

BLOOMSBURG -- A man begged not to be shot as he was robbed at gunpoint on the street here Sunday night, charges say. Victim Jeffrey Rush told police he was pistol whipped and repeatedly attacked after he fell to the ground on East Third Street. But he managed to get to his feet, running to a back yard in the 400 block so he could call 9-1-1 around 9:20 p.m. His attackers, Carlin Marcus Edwards and Samuel Andre Jeannot, fled, but Edwards was picked up and in police custody within 90 minutes, charges say.

Firefighter's family flees burning home

BERWICK -- Fire ripped through a trailer in Berwick about 5:30 a.m. Sunday, but smoke alarms alerted the sleeping family inside, fire officials said. Flames destroyed the mobile home at 1633 Franklin St., the home of a fire department volunteer, said Berwick Fire Chief Bill Coolbaugh. The place is a total loss but no one was hurt.
