Mushroom misidentified

A submitted photo printed on Page 9 of today's Press Enterprise shows a jack o' lantern mushroom, which is a toxic mushroom, according to multiple mushroom foragers who have contacted the Press Enterprise newsroom.

Fire devours Beach Haven house

BEACH HAVEN — Fire engulfed a house here late Sunday night, devouring the structure and killing a dog, the fire chief said.

However, no one was living in the house, which had recently been sold at a sheriff’s sale, said Salem Township Fire Chief Lee Smith.

The blaze at 129 Walnut Drive was reported around 11:30 p.m. by a neighbor, he said.

Officer Raymond Tonkinson was among the first at the scene; flames had already swallowed the two-story house.

Suspected shooter turns himself in

BLOOMSBURG — Joseph Ten Eyck, who police say shot a man during a robbery attempt in town Friday night turned himself in to State Police Wednesday morning.

Ten Eyck, 19, 2890 Lackawanna Avenue, Bloomsburg, was arraigned by District Judge Russell Lawton on charges that include attempted homicide before being jailed for lack of $250,000 cash bail.

State Police evacuate Berwick Sheetz

 

BERWICK – State Police evacuated the Sheetz here Friday for about three hours while they investigated a suspicious package left at the front of the building.

Police evacuated the Sheetz on West Front Street, Route 11, around 12:15 p.m. and deployed a robot at the scene. Soon after, an officer in protective gear approached the package.

A state trooper later told the Press Enterprise that the report of a bomb was deemed non-credible.

Shots fired in Staples parking lot

BLOOMSBURG — Someone fired a gun in the Staples parking lot here Tuesday night before fleeing in a car toward Fifth Street, the police chief said.

Scott Price said no one was hit in what may have been a “drug deal gone bad” in the lot located in the Giant Plaza along Route 11 near the Scott Township line.

Ex BU dean wins $3.9 million in lawsuit

HARRISBURG — It took a jury just over six hours to decide the Bloomsburg University and the State System of Higher Education had wrongfully targeted and fired a business school dean after he helped a secretary report allegations of improper conduct by BU‘s president in 2018.
